You will view examples of video-based assessments used in both online and in person courses to help you brainstorm ideas for your classes. And finally, sample instructions you can use in your classes to have students submit video-based assessments through Canvas are provided.

Academic Honesty in Async Classes

This workshop introduces strategies to maintain the academic integrity of asynchronous courses. At a time when cheating in online classes is at an all-time high, you will first explore ways in which students are using resources inappropriately and learn what you can do to combat their use. Second, you will learn how getting creative with course assignments can encourage learning while accurately assessing a student's level of understanding.

Creating Student-Friendly Canvas Classes for Any Modality

Learn how to create a better user experience for students in any Canvas course by increasing the visual appeal of the site, and addressing the organization of your course materials and Canvas pages. The techniques shared apply to all course modalities. Participants will have access to instructional videos that provide details on how to implement most strategies presented.

Introduction to Canvas Workshop Part 1 / Part 2

Canvas is a comprehensive Learning Management System (LMS) that enables educators to create, organize, and deliver course content, assessments, and communications in a user-friendly virtual environment, supporting diverse learning modalities such as fully online, hybrid, and face-to-face classes. These asynchronous self-enrollment courses equip beginner faculty with essential skills to navigate Canvas, manage courses, enhance student engagement through communication and collaboration tools, and efficiently handle assessments and grading. Part one of the series will focus on the structure of the Canvas course, communications, and assessment, and Part two will cover engagement, analytics, and accessibility.

  • Part 1 Outcomes: This course provides faculty members with essential skills and knowledge to effectively utilize Canvas, our Learning Management System (LMS). Participants will begin by mastering the platform's navigation, including accessing classes, managing accounts, seeking assistance, and utilizing the interface. Subsequently, they will explore the course structure, communication tools, and collaborative features to enhance student engagement. The course also covers assessment and grading functionalities, teaching participants how to develop quizzes and assignments and manage grading workflows efficiently within Canvas. Upon completion, faculty members can confidently navigate Canvas and create content, communication channels, and assessment components with confidence.
  • Part 2 Outcomes: Taking this class empowers teachers to create accessible, well-organized, and engaging Canvas courses by mastering Universal Design for Learning principles, using built-in accessibility checkers, and incorporating a variety of content formats to ensure all students—including those with disabilities—can fully participate. Participants will also learn proven strategies for fostering student collaboration and engagement in any instructional mode, and they’ll leverage Canvas analytics to identify students needing extra support and make data-informed improvements. By developing these skills, teachers can build inclusive, interactive learning environments that adapt to changing educational needs and enhance student success, making this class valuable for anyone seeking to maximize the benefits of Canvas LMS in their teaching practice.

TidyUp: Organizing Your Canvas Course

Keep your Canvas courses clean and organized with TidyUP, a new tool available through May 31, 2026. This brief, self-paced workshop introduces faculty to TidyUP’s powerful features for streamlining course content, such as identifying unused files, locating duplicates, removing empty folders, and bulk-deleting outdated materials. Through step-by-step guides and demonstration videos, you’ll learn how to manage your course files efficiently and create a more organized, student-friendly Canvas experience.

Canvas Assessment Strategies and Methods

This asynchronous workshop will focus on exploring effective assessment strategies in Canvas. We will examine different learning modes, effective community building strategies, different Canvas assessment methods will be discussed and practiced. We will discuss some strategies for using the Turnitin tool, setting rubrics, grading methods, and peer assessments from within Turnitin.  We will briefly discuss AI tools and some strategies to approach in the AI era.

Introduction to Canvas Studio Workshop

Canvas Studio is a powerful video platform and collaboration tool seamlessly integrated with the Canvas learning management system. Through its diverse features, such as video recording, editing tools, annotations, and quizzes, Canvas Studio will enable our faculty to create compelling video content that facilitates better comprehension and knowledge retention. Learn to create, edit, upload, share, and enhance videos to foster interactive learning.

  • Outcome: By completing this Introduction to Canvas Studio course, professors will gain proficiency in creating, editing, uploading, and sharing multimedia content directly within Canvas, promoting interactive and inclusive learning experiences. Participants will learn to utilize Studio's video recording, screen capture, and editing tools; add captions and annotations for accessibility; create interactive video quizzes; and analyze media effectiveness and student engagement through built-in analytics. Each self-paced module provides hands-on demonstrations, step-by-step guidance, and unlimited knowledge checks, ensuring faculty can confidently integrate multimedia into their teaching to promote student engagement and make informed decisions based on the usage data.

Certificate Description and Requirements

The TNT Certificate empowers instructors to confidently design and facilitate courses that promote student success in face-to-face, hybrid, and online settings.

Certificate Purpose

The Teaching and Technology (TNT) Certificate is designed to support faculty in developing effective, engaging, and accessible teaching practices by integrating instructional technologies thoughtfully. This program provides participants with practical strategies and hands-on experience using tools such as Canvas LMS and related technologies to enhance course design, student engagement, assessment, and academic integrity across all instructional modalities.

Through a combination of synchronous workshops and asynchronous, self-paced courses, faculty will explore evidence-based approaches to teaching with technology and develop skills to create inclusive, student-centered learning environments.

Certificate Requirements

To earn the Teaching and Technology Certificate, participants must complete a combination of required foundational coursework and elective professional development workshops.

Required Courses

Participants must complete the following core sequence:

  • Introduction to Canvas Part 1 (Asynchronous)
  • Introduction to Canvas Part 2 (Asynchronous)

These courses provide foundational knowledge of Canvas course design, communication tools, assessment strategies, student engagement techniques, analytics, and accessibility best practices.

Elective Workshops and Courses

In addition to the required foundational Introduction to Canvas Part 1 and Part 2 courses, participants must complete one additional workshop or course from the following offerings:

  • Video-Based Assessments: Ideas and Execution for Online and In-Person Courses (Synchronous)
  • Academic Honesty in Asynchronous Classes (Synchronous)
  • Creating Student-Friendly Canvas Courses for Any Modality (Synchronous)
  • TidyUp: Organizing Your Canvas Course (Asynchronous)

These electives allow participants to deepen their expertise in areas such as multimedia integration, course organization, academic integrity, assessment design, and student-centered course development.

Completion Expectations

  • Active participation in all required components
  • Completion of all assigned activities within asynchronous courses
  • Attendance at selected synchronous sessions (if applicable)

Upon successful completion of the requirements, participants will earn the Teaching and Technology Certificate, recognizing their commitment to innovative, accessible, and effective teaching with technology.

Teaching and Technology workshops, activities, and resources are open and available to all who are interested in applying and/or participating, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity, national origin, or any other protected status.
