Step 3B: Student Submits a Paper and Instructor Views the Originality Report

It is recommended that instructors ask students to submit their papers directly to Turnitin.com. In order to submit a paper students will need to create a student user profile using the Turnitin class ID number and class enrollment password created by the instructor in Step 2 . View a video on how students can create a Turnitin account and submit their papers. The student paper submission process is similar to the instructor paper submission process described in Step 3A.

Once students have submitted their papers, the Instructor can view the Originality Report.

1. Go to http://www.turnitin.com and login using your e-mail address and password.

4. The papers submitted will be listed in the Inbox. Click the report icon adjacent to the the assignment to review the originality report.

The color of the report icon indicates the overall similarity index of the paper, based on how much matching text was found. The following table defines the similarity index:

  No matching text
  1 word -24% matching text
  25-49% matching text
  50-74% matching text
  75-100% matching text

Learn how to read Turnitin.coms new and improved Originality Report (7/2005) in this video. The video covers the report's many features.

Note: These matching text indices do not reflect Turnitin's assessment of whether a paper has or has not been plagiarized. Originality reports are simply tools to help you find sources that contain text similar to submitted papers.

The decision to deem any work "plagiarized" must be made carefully, and only after careful examination of both the submitted paper and the suspect sources.
