Using AI Technology Guidelines

Rationale

CSUF is committed to supporting teaching, learning, research, and service. Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has the power to facilitate and disrupt each of these areas. The use of GAI tools requires a reflective approach, including consideration of biases and inaccuracies in AI output, as well as ethical use of these technologies. The University community should investigate where and when generative AI might be appropriate for achieving their objectives and should be transparent about its use. The following guidelines have been developed for the campus community.

Provide Ongoing Support for Generative AI

Provide ongoing support for the responsible use of Generative AI by faculty, staff, and students.

User Review of AI-Generated Content

Because Generative AI is prone to inaccuracies, biases, and omissions, all users must review and verify AI generated content before using it for teaching, learning, scholarly and creative activity, or other purposes. This includes Generative AI detectors, which have been proven to be unreliable and biased.

Academic Integrity

Uphold academic honesty and integrity by conforming to CSUF policy when using AI technologies, ensuring that AI assistance enhances learning and scholarly and creative activity without compromising the authenticity of academic work or assessments. Maintain transparency in the integration of AI tools for teaching, scholarly and creative activity, and service. Instructors should provide clear guidance for acceptable AI use.

Protection of Intellectual Property, Information Security and Privacy Policies

Prioritize safeguarding confidential information and user intellectual property by following established policies on data security and privacy to prevent unauthorized access or misuse of sensitive data. Stay vigilant and educate users to recognize and guard against AI-driven phishing attempts or scams that may exploit vulnerabilities in technological systems for malicious purposes.
