The Rockefeller Foundation Humanities Fellowships
2002-2003
The Program
The fellowships support scholars and writers engaged in research on global
social and cultural issues relating to diversity, sustainability and civil
society. For 2002-2003, individuals can apply for resident fellowships
at the 24 host institutions listed. Institutional applications are encouraged
for students in the humanities that seek to understand global interactions
and to analyze the impact of the mobility of ideas and people on an increasingly
global civil society. The Foundation, in providing these fellowships,
seeks to promote the interdisciplinary dialogue that is the hallmark of
new scholarship in these areas, to provide resources and encouragement
to innovating scholars, and to fortify the institutions that are advancing
this work.
Application
By Individual
The fellowships are designed to serve scholars who are testing disciplinary
boundaries or moving into newer fields of inquiry within the humanities.
The majority of time will be spent on pursuing one's own research toward
publication but residency may also involve participation in seminars,
conferences or other collaborative activities within the host program.
Awards may not be used for the completion of graduate studies, advanced
training, or for writing poetry or fiction. For complete information about
eligibility, stipends and procedures for application is available directly
from current host institutions listed below.
By Institutions
Applications are invited from various programs in colleges, universities
and other institutions (i.e., libraries, museums and community cultural
spaces) of value to international or intercultural scholarship in the
humanities. Programs that address particular interests of: social construction
of race, gender, ethnicity and religion; the consequences of diasporas,
migration and new forms of citizenship; or the resilience of social systems
and how cultures regenerate themselves.
Institutions intending to apply should submit a brief letter describing
the focus of the proposal by December 3, 2001. Applications must be completed
and received by February 1, 2002.
Since applications require an essay (10-15 pgs) and supporting materials,
applicants are advised to request additional information (application
packet and detailed instructions) well in advance of the deadline at:
