Faculty-Undergraduate Student Research/Creative Activity Grants
PURPOSE
This faculty-undergraduate student support initiative is aimed at encouraging faculty across the campus to involve undergraduates in substantive ways in their scholarly or creative activities. The emphasis of this initiative is to provide a high quality experience for undergraduates by introducing them to the research or creative paradigms of a discipline through close working relationships with faculty. The collaborative faculty-student interactions that occur as part of involvement in research or creative endeavors constitute a valuable and rich source of learning and contribute greatly to students’ educational experiences.
ELIGIBILITY
- All full-time faculty on campus who do not have any extramural funding for the student’s involvement in the particular project being proposed are eligible to apply.
- Undergraduates should be selected by the faculty member to work jointly on the research or creative project that has a clear program of active mentoring and shows evidence of substantial student initiative or contribution.
- Faculty members should submit no more than 2 distinctly different proposals (though the number of students involved in a given project is up to the discretion of the faculty and funds are up to $1,000 per project regardless of the number of students).
- Funding can be used to support student travel or supplies, but cannot be used to pay the student investigator a stipend or salary or to support faculty travel.
- In the interest of recruiting new undergraduates for this program, students who have received past funding from this initiative shall be eligible for no more than $500.
AWARDS
Faculty and students may apply for up to $1,000 per project regardless of the number of students.
REVIEW CRITERIA
The following criteria will be used in determining the award recipients:
- The overall quality of the project.
- The quality of the scholarly mentoring and interaction between the faculty member and the student.
- The quality of the educational experience for the student above and beyond a course assignment.
- The amount of a distinguishable contribution by the student to the project.
- The likelihood that the project will lead to a conference presentation, publication, exhibition, or other creative performance that clearly credits the student’s involvement.
