Civic Engagement and the Discipline: Where is the “civic” in service-learning?
Friday, May 14, 2004 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. (Lunch Provided)
Titan Student Union, Ontiveros
Sponsored by: Faculty Development Center and the Center for Internships & Service-Learning
Workshop Description
This day-long workshop for faculty will engage us with the challenge: how can we integrate a civic education dimension into service-learning and other teaching within our own discipline? We will begin the day with a presentation to provide context and background for the topic and end with practical “how top’s.” Our speaker will offer her perspectives and raise provocative questions on the contested concept and practice of civic engagement, in order to launch a discussion on our own views and practice. Notwithstanding the lack of consensus on what it is and/or what it ought to be, we will consider the urgency of civic education and how we might practice it in the here and now. Thus, we will move from the philosophical questions (“what and why”) to the practical application (“how and with what outcomes”) of civic education. We will conclude with concrete examples and suggestions for our consideration, along with an invitation to apply for a mini-grant to design a service-learning course with civic engagement outcomes.
