Active Learning and Classroom Communication

Dates and Times

January 10, 2003 10 AM – 2 PM
January 17, 2003 12 N – 1 PM

Description

This four-hour workshop will provide you with tools and techniques that will improve your students’ involvement in the teaching and learning of your course materials. You will experience methodologies from the student’s point of view that will encourage participation learning, and we will experiment with communication tools that can enhance Active Learning. “Active Learning” strategies elicit student learning through group participation, and the discovery and negotiation of knowledge.

Over the course of the week 1/10-1/17 the participants will log on to a workshop website where they will engage in online discussion with each other about readings on active learning and student participation. The group will reconvene for a one-hour “brownbag” lunch on 1/17 at 12 Noon to discuss our experiences with online discussion.

We will look at:

  • Techniques for starting, promoting, encouraging class discussion
  • Rubrics for assessment of discussion
  • Tools and techniques for online discussion
  • Threaded discussion
  • Instant messaging and chat
  • Online Discussion Management techniques

Space is limited for this special FDC workshop, so sign up while you can at
