Diversity Related Material in the Classroom

FDC Diversity Workshop Series
Spring 2002

"How to Talk About Diversity Related Material in the Classroom"

Thursday, April 25, 2002, 12:00 p.m., PL44F, Facilitated by Michael Perez

As educators, a challenge many of us face in the classroom involves the delicate balance of promoting mutually beneficial frank discourse regarding diversity-related issues in the context of the ever-changing political and economic climate, and shifting demographics, - issues that tend to be emotionally charged. How do we create a classroom environment that "keeps it real" on issues of diversity and inequality, in a way that sparks the learning process among students with divergent experiences? This workshop will attempt to grapple with some of these issues, and will present (and solicit) various strategies to incorporate "diversity-related" material into the classroom.
