Designing Instruction for ALL Students: Universal Design for the College Classroom
Description
This workshop is designed as an introduction to the theory of Universally Designed instruction. It will involve a candid discussion about the myths and realities of working with students with disabilities and examination of stories from students with disabilities as they navigate our courses. Participants also will be exposed to teaching tips as well as assistive tools (from low to high tech) that will better enable them to serve all students in the college classroom. Implications for practice working with students with specific disabilities will be discussed as well as the potential benefit for ALL students.
Objectives
- Participants will discuss myths and realities in order to increase their awareness of disabilities and the impact of disabilities.
- Participants will be exposed to the CSU Access to Technology Initiative that sets goals for student access to learning materials.
- Participants will learn about the principles of Universally Designed Instruction
- Participants will learn about general accommodations and modifications.
- Participants will be presented with teaching tips that they can use in order to better serve students with disabilities in their college classrooms.
