Designing and Assessing Writing Assignments

Description

This workshop will address how to create successful writing assignments and how to effectively assess student writing. The session will begin with a discussion of two basic questions: 1. Why do we want students to write? and 2. What does effective assessment of student writing look like? We will consider how the design and assessment of writing assignments is an interconnected process, rather than two distinct activities. Drawing upon our unique disciplinary experiences, there will be a discussion of various pedagogical strategies for making the writing process work in the classroom. Prior to the workshop, please send the facilitator (ldalley@fullerton.edu) the following documents:

  • A writing assignment that worked well in the classroom.
  • A writing assignment that was unsuccessful (or that you would like to improve).
  • A grading rubric, if you use one.

The facilitator will photocopy the documents so that participants have authentic materials to work with during the workshop.

Objectives:

  • Analyze and understand the relationship between the design and assessment of student writing assignments.
  • Create new writing assignments and/or revise existing assignments, based upon our discussion of desired learning outcomes and assessment criteria.
  • Discuss pedagogical strategies for effective implementation of writing assignments.
