SPSS
Intermediate – Univariate & Bivariates:
Descriptives, Comparisons & Effect Sizes
Description
This hands-on workshop comes in two parts. It is a continuation of the FDC's "Introduction to SPSS" workshop and shows you how to use SPSS for univariate and bivariate analysis. To participate in this intermediate workshop you should have completed the “Introduction to SPSS" class.
This intermediate workshop is typically offered once each semester.
Prerequisites
- At least six months of continuous, hands-on experience using Windows, a keyboard, and mouse.
- Knowledge of how to use SPSS, e.g., FDC’s introductory SPSS class.
Objectives
Part 1:
- Univariate Descriptives
- Frequencies: univariates – descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, barcharts, histograms & more advanced graphing
- Descriptives: Statistics, comparing means between categories, standardizing (to z-scores)
- Explore: Statistics, and plots: stem and leaf displays, boxplots
- Split File
- Select Cases, including random selection
- Compute
- Bivariates Descriptives
- Descriptives, e.g., comparing means between variables of same metric
- Explore, e.g., two-way boxplots
- Univariate Inferential Testing:
- Runs test
- One-way chi-square
- One-sample t-test
Part 2:
- Bivariate Inferential Testing:
- Correlation, with scatterplot and some plot manipulation (e.g., fit a regression line and labels to the data)
- t-test, independent & paired samples
- Two-way contingency tables (crosstabs and chi-square), pivot tables
- Practical v. statistical significance; effect size, e.g., : R-square, odds ratios, effect sizes
