BB4 - Blackboard: Discussion Board Tool and Group Pages

Description

Interested in fostering rich in-depth discussions, hearing from the silent majority of students, engaging students in discussion before or after class, or enabling students to collaborate online in small groups, then join us for this hands-on workshop. In this 2-part series, you'll learn how to create and effectively use Blackboard 7.2's online threaded discussion board with both large and small groups.

With discussion board and group pages you can:

  • Engage your students in in-depth online discussions.
  • Hear the thoughts and ideas of the silent majority.
  • Develop students' critical thinking skills in a virtual environment.
  • Incorporate online discussions as an effective form of student assessment.
  • Prepare students for an in-class discussion.
  • Continue an interesting discussion in between class meetings.
  • Hold discussions when you are away at a conference.
  • Provide a virtual space for students to collaborate on group projects and papers and engage in small group discussions

Part 1:

  • Benefits & uses of Discussion Board – a key tool in effective online teaching
  • The multiple uses of asynchronous discussion forums
  • Roles of instructor & student in an online discussion
  • Guidelines for Best Results (facilitating discussions, frequency & quality of posts, ground rules, etc.)
  • Hands-on activities:
    • Creating discussion forums & threads including the many new options in Blackboard 7.2 (subscribe, rate, forced moderation)
    • Navigate, read, and reply to discussions
    • Managing discussions with a variety of Bb tools
    • Searching discussion boards

Part 2:

  • Grading online discussions – the use of grading rubrics
  • Multiple uses of online small groups
  • Integrating the use of small and large group discussion in Blackboard
  • Hands-on activities:
    • Grading forums in Blackboard
    • Grading threads in Blackboard
    • Creating Small Groups in Blackboard
    • Time permitting: Creating discussion boards in content areas and archiving discussion boards
Prerequisites
  • Blackboard Course Web Site Design and Development workshop.
  • Basic computer and internet skills.
