Tony Rimmer is a Professor in the Department of Communications at California State University, Fullerton. He has taught at the undergraduate and graduate level in communications theory, research methods, media survey, and in print and broadcast journalism reporting and production courses. He has taught in Hong Kong and in England. Before coming to Cal State Fullerton, Dr. Rimmer taught at Indiana University’s School of Journalism; he also worked for about ten years as a television producer in New Zealand.
Dr. Rimmer earned his doctoral degree in communications from the University of Texas at Austin, his master’s degree in Radio-TV-Film from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his bachelor’s degree in agricultural science from Massey University in New Zealand.
Dr. Rimmer’s research interests include the development of theory and research methodologies which inform the roles of the mass media in social, political, and professional life. He has authored or co-authored several book chapters and journal articles on topics such as media and religion, media economics, media and politics, new media technologies, and on methodological issues around the conceptualizing and measurement of media use.
Dr. Rimmer is active both locally and nationally in service to the profession and to the University. He was a member of the academic senate at Cal State Fullerton from 2002-2004. In 2004, he was elected vice president of Kappa Tau Alpha, the national journalism and mass communication honor society, and he has been the faculty advisor of the honor society’s CSUF chapter since 1993.
