Policy on use of Graphics
Arts facility in the FDC
1. The FDC Graphics facility is for the use of faculty engaged
in teaching and research only. As time and resources permit, other
campus community members’ needs may be accommodated but only if
the proposed work does not displace pending faculty needs.
2. Faculty members are permitted one “free” poster (for display
at conferences, on campus, or at other research symposia) per academic
year. Subsequent posters may be created, as scheduling of the
graphics arts facility permits, for a fee of $5.00 per square foot. There
will be a “rush fee” of $10 per square foot if the poster requires
less than 48 hours to complete.
3. Posters displaying student-faculty collaboration are permitted
under the conditions stated in number 2 above. Under no circumstances
are student posters permitted when there is no clear evidence of
student-faculty collaboration. Under no circumstances will posters
be produced for students as part of a classroom assignment.
4. When submitting computer files for production by the graphic
artist, please format according to the instructions below:
a. In Powerpoint, Open a
new file and select blank
presentation and choose the completely blank slide
to build your poster.
b. Under Page Setup, select custom for
paper size and fill in the dimensions for your poster. Determine
in advance whether you wish your poster to be Landscape or Portrait in
orientation. The actual size will be dictated in the instructions
for your poster session. For example, the following dimensions
can be used for a Landscape poster: 48 inches for width and 36
inches for height. Be sure to set this size before constructing
your poster. Remember that one dimension can’t be more than
36 inches because of the limitations of the printer. The printer
will not print to the edge of the paper, so make sure to keep
all text and graphics about inch away from the edge of the page. When
selecting colors, it works best to use light colors for the background
because of streaking and bleed through problems with the printer.
c. Select the Text Box tool and begin to
type in the text. Text can also be copied from Word files and
pasted into an open text box. To obtain the desired size and
proportions of the text box, resize by pulling on the handles
at the edges of the box. Font size will vary depending on the
size of your poster. For example, Times 54 point can be used
for section titles or headings, Times 30 point can be used for
blocks of text and Times 72 pt can be used for the poster title.
d. Inserting digitized images, graphs, clip
art, etc: First make sure that there is nothing selected on
the page by clicking on a blank space on the poster. Next go
to the pull down menu and find Insert, pull down
and find Picture and then find From File. Find
the file containing your digitized image and click on Insert. This
will insert the digitized image or file into your poster. The
image can be resized by pulling on the handles at the corners
of the box. To ensure that the image is enlarged or reduced
proportionally, hold down the shift key while pulling on the
handles. Images will look best if they are scanned at a minimum
of 300 dpi. If the images is to be saved as a jpeg file make
sure to select maximum quality.
e. To view the layout
of the full poster and arrange the poster components, adjust
the viewing
field to about 20% (see the upper right of the top tool bar)
or zoom out under the view pull down menu. To work on individual
pieces of your poster, zoom in or increase the % to more clearly
see your work. Move the pieces around on your poster creating
the desired spacing.
f. When the poster has been completed,
print a sample copy on 8.5 by 11 inch paper for inspection. This
can be done by selecting the Scale to Fit Paper box
on an HP DeskJet printer after selecting Print.
Other print drivers will have their own scale to paper equivalent.
g. Save your poster
onto a Zip Disk and contact Kelly Donovan at x7143
to print the final, full size version. Send by email to: kdonovan@fullerton.edu
Other formats, such as Adobe Illustrator, are also acceptable. Please
contact Kelly Donovan with any questions.
